When will I get approved for Self-Direction?
It is a process with many steps. Where you are on the road depends on how long it will take. If you are found to be eligible, it is worth the time and effort. Here is OPWDD’s booklet on the process. Review the various services and programs and determine what best fit your needs. If you want self-direction, be sure to inform the DDRO as you are going through the process.

What can I expect?
Step 1: The eligibility review process is the way OPWDD determines if you have a developmental disability or are eligible for supports and services.
Step 2: Apply For Medicaid, (if you don’t already have it). OPWDD will provide a list of potential non-Medicaid Care Manager or a Care Coordination organization to assist you to begin this process.
Step 3: Once you are found to be eligible and have Medicaid (or Medicaid Waiver), you will choose a Care Manager at a local CCO.
Step 4: They will assist you with the Home and Based Waiver Service Program. Once you qualify for this, you can choose a broker and Fiscal intermediary to begin the self-direction start up process.
Step 5: Remember to come to Join SOYAN Connect so you will receive information on news, resources and everything you need to know when you are on Self-Direction.
Step 6: Work with your start up broker, family, friends to develop a person-centered plan based upon your wants, needs and goals in life. Develop a self-direction budget utilizing the budget lines that fits your needs.
