Advocacy is the act of speaking up about your concerns and challenges, knowing who to speak with, building a working relationship with the other person, listening to the other person’s perspective with the intention of collaborating and negotiating to find a solution to your problem.
There are 2 kinds of Advocacy:
Self-Advocacy: Advocacy for YOUR challenges aimed at FI’s, Care Managers, Brokers and Program Directors
System Advocacy: Advocacy for the greater good of all people similarly situated aimed at OPWDD leadership and state and local legislators.
